Public Crucifixion →
From Waiter Rant: Every single one of us, especially me, has acted like a complete and utter asshole. That’s part of parcel of being human. None of us is a saint. And now, with the Internet, every stupid thing we do has the potential to become a worldwide Internet phenomenon. And that’s a very bad thing. The rest of the article is worth a read.

Graph interpretation →
This would be a quote if it were shorter. What does this graph convey? It doesn’t tell us much about phone calls, but it does tell us that some people can make colored maps with lots of lines. It also tells us that someone has a bunch of telephone call data. Even though the lines on the graph are difficult to interpret, they (correctly, I assume) convey that they come from a big database.

Half of US social program recipients believe they... →
That’s pretty surprising, yet not, at the same time. “Reconstituting the Submerged State: The Challenges of Social Policy Reform in the Obama Era,” a paper by Cornell’s Clinton Rossiter Professor of American Institutions Suzanne Mettler features this remarkable chart showing that about half of American social program beneficiaries believe that they “have not used a...

Why Every Maker Should Learn Chinese →
Apt. If you make anything, eventually you’ll find that there isn’t a supply chain that beats what China has; while a lot of people will claim goods are made in China only because of lower costs, that’s not 100% true. The supply chain of components to assembly are almost impossible to find elsewhere. If you look at once-booming industrial cities in the USA, you’ll see a lot of the work, from...

DHS documents show agency isn't sure pornoscanners... →
Don’t go through the scanner. The Electronic Privacy Information Center is going great guns with its Freedom of Information requests to the DHS on the full-body radiation scanners (“pornoscanners”) used in airports. EPIC’s liberated documents suggest that the DHS itself has failed to adequately test scanners for radiation risk, that they’re worried about this, and...

Google + (-Me) →
Yup. I have two problems with Google +: It’s made by Google. I don’t trust Google. That is: I don’t trust Google with my private info, unless the offering is so compelling that it would be detrimental to me to not use their offering.
