The researchers’ earlier observations had shown that the quasar was shooting out a radio-wavelength jet of high-energy particles and gas. They noted that this jet is directed at the companion galaxy, indicating that it might be supplying matter that eventually becomes incorporated into new stars in the companion galaxy. The quasar and the companion galaxy are also moving toward each other, suggesting that the quasar will eventually merge with and settle at the center of the galaxy it has helped construct.
